Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers continued to fly under the radar coming off the bye week and did not attend Monday’s press conference.
It’s the second straight game week that Texas did not make its starting quarterback available to reporters. While Earth won’t fall off its axis, it’s a little out of the norm for a program that has always promoted its starting quarterback.
Still, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is more concerned about Ewers getting better on the practice field and finding his rhythm again.
“I thought Quinn had a good week,” Sarkisian said of Ewers’ bye week practice efforts. “He looks fresh. He looks healthy. He’s really delivering the ball well. I like his base that he’s operating with. Thought he was really intentional with his feet and with his base against Vanderbilt.”

Ewers got off to a strong start in the first half against Vanderbilt. A tipped pass was intercepted early and led to the Commodores’ first score. But otherwise, Ewers was dialed in during the half and had 17 consecutive completions, which tied for third-most in school history.
“We just keep showing that the culture around us and the way that we can persevere through some tough starts,” Ewers said after the Vanderbilt game. “I’m just proud of the way that we responded to a little adversity early.”
Ewers had another tipped pass result in an interception. Sarkisian felt both picks were unfortunate more than things Ewers did wrong.
“I mean, at the position that I play, you’ve got to be able to wipe those type of things off, because for the most part, they’re out of your control,” Ewers said.
After the Vanderbilt game, Ewers said he’s “probably back to feeling normal” about his strained abdominal injury that kept him out of 2 1/2 games earlier this season.

The Horns need Ewers to be at his best these final four games. The junior has fallen back in the Heisman Trophy race at the moment and now sits 48th nationally in yards per game (231.5).
The Longhorns could help by running the ball better, no question. The offensive line also allowed four sacks and two quarterback pressures. But Ewers can also help with a quick start to get the offense moving faster. Texas’ opponents have scored first in the last three games, and the offense has only two touchdown drives in those three first quarters. Pre-snap penalties have also been abundant the last two games.
Texas tight end Gunnar Helm said “it takes all 11” on offense but Ewers can make all the throws.
“I think just cleaning up all these penalties, pre-snap penalties, especially at home, picking up the blitzes that these defenses send, allowing Quinn to feel protected,” Helm said, “I think we just got to get back to what we did at the start of the season.”
