The Cincinnati Bengals have made the Khalil Herbert trade official, which means quarterback Joe Burrow can officially comment on it. Burrow gave the seal of approval for the acquisition of the Bengals' newest running back.

"Yeah, it's something that we needed, I think, and I'm glad that we went out and tried to get better," Burrow said Tuesday following the trade. "I've watched Khalil in the past, I think he'll be able to help us."

The Bengals have performed many firsts since Burrow has arrived in Cincinnati, and this deal is no exception. This is the first time the Bengals have traded one of their future NFL Draft picks for a new player at the trade deadline without involving a player swap or getting any draft capital in return.

It's clear why the Bengals traded for Herbert. Zack Moss is now on the Reserve/Injured list and Chase Brown needs a new partner at running back. Being interested in filling this need is one thing, but going out and making it happen is something the Bengals have never been able to accomplish at this part of the season.

"Well, I think one with with Zack's injury, you know, that's tough," Burrow said. "He was playing really well for us, and we haven't been good enough this year to win the amount of games that we want to and to make a move and try to improve the team midseason is positive."

The timing of the move makes for an interesting dilemma. Herbert is now in the building as the Bengals prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday night. He will be eligible to play, but how much he plays will be a mystery until we see it unfold.

Burrow says it will be possible to get Herbert prepared to contribute in time.

"Yeah. I think so," Burrow said of getting Herbert on the same page so quickly. "We'll find out, I guess, but football is football for the most part. You know, a couple new languages, but he's right there next to me, so I can tell him what do when he's out there. We'll see how much he ends up playing, but I'm confident that we can get him right."

Beyond Thursday night, there are seven more games for the Bengals to try and sneak their way into the playoffs. Addressing an immediate need in an unconventional does have an impact on how Burrow and the players feel about the front office.

"I think that shows that they believe in the players on this team to go and do what we want to do this year," Burrow said. "You know, maybe there was holes here and there, but, you know, they they want to go out and improve the team for this stretch, and that's exciting and positive for our team."

The Bengals still have a roster spot open as of this posting. Expect that to be filled by a defensive player in the near future.
