The Chicago Bears offense has been a major disappointment through the first nine weeks of the 2024 season and it's something no one expected to see.
A unit with the top rookie quarterback in the class paired with three high-caliber receivers, one of the best tight ends in football, plus a dynamic running back was held out of the end zone on Sunday for the second time in eight games.
On Wednesday, the team's rookie quarterback got brutally honest about what needs to change and where that change starts.
"We're going to get there," Williams explained. "I'm going to get there. But I think that it starts with me and then boils down from there."
Williams added that the bulk of the struggles have been self-inflicted mistakes such as penalties, inaccurate passes, and issues in the run game.
Entering the league, accuracy was one of Williams' top traits as a passer and so far it has turned into one of his biggest issues on the field.
"It's frustrating because I've worked hard over the years starting to become a quarterback on accuracy being the most important thing," Williams said. "I still pride myself on that, and so not being accurate, not being on time with things, it's frustrating just because it's kind been my thing, something I've been at least pretty solid at. Right now, I've been not as solid as I pride myself on."
Through his first eight games, Williams has completed 61.4 percent of his passes, which ranks 22nd among 24 quarterbacks with 250+ dropbacks, per PFF.
One of the most disappointing connections has been with the team's top wide receiver DJ Moore. Last year, Moore exploded onto the season with the Bears, but this season his consistent production has taken a drop with his rookie quarterback throwing him the ball.
"Obviously, it's not a in a place from the past games, where we would like it, both of us," Williams added. "It's frustrating because you got a guy so special and not being able to connect and get on certain passes is frustrating for myself, frustrating for him, because as a wide receiver especially, we get but so many chances, so many times the ball comes your way. So I wouldn't put it past him that it's frustrating. But we got to figure it out. The point about football is figuring out why things are certain ways and finding ways to overcome or get better at it."
Sacks has also been a major concern through the start of the season for the Bears' rookie. According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, Williams is "on pace to be sacked 62 times this season, which would be tied for the sixth most in NFL history."
When asked why taking so many sacks has been such a consistent detriment for the offense, Williams once again shouldered the blame.
"I understand that it's part of the game, that's the defense's job, to get me down. I do understand also that I have to do better at certain times to get the ball out, understanding the situation," Williams said. "It may be a third down, and those are times where you may hold the ball longer, but you know, if there's something underneath that can get us the first down instead of trying to hit maybe one of the outs, the bench routes or the dagger routes and things like that. You know, take the check down. Give it to one of your guys a space and go to work. I think I can do better job with that."
It's great to see Williams take some accountability for some of the things holding the talented group of offensive players back, but not everything is on him alone. There's a lot to be fixed with the Bears' offense and it's not going to happen overnight.
