There already isn't much to look forward to in the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Their season was over a long time ago, now it's just about seeing how many losses they finish with to put them as high in the draft order as possible.
The team is not good, and you can probably assume that they will lose every single game from here on out. And, in a way, that is good. But, believe it or not, there is still something positive to look forward to in this season. And, we may even get to see it this weekend against the Denver Broncos.
On Wednesday, head coach Antonio Pierce started off his press conference with a little injury update. He mentioned that several players would not practice on Sunday. Zamir White, Alexander Mattison, and Jack Jones won't practice on Wednesday.
This will only open up opportunities for some rookies to get some reps in practice, and maybe even play more on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
"Two running backs won't practice and neither will Jack Jones. Next man up mentality. We are going to get these younger guys some reps, see how they do, and hopefully, we get the others back by the end of the week," Pierce said on Wednesday.
When he says younger guys, he means running back Dylan Laube, whom the Raiders drafted in the sixth round of this last draft, and Decamerion Richardson along with maybe the practice squad guys at the corner that are super young.
Those two guys though, are the two that will very much be a part of the future of this team. Well, that's the plan anyway.
"You're looking at Ameer [Abdullah], Dylan [Laube], we have Sincere [McCormick] on the practice squad. Get them some reps and get them going," Pierce said when asked who would replace the two RBs who already get the majority of snaps.
As for Abdullah, he scored last week on a pretty nice play. With Laube, he has shown flashes and was a fan favorite during training camp. He has the ability to be a good pass catcher, but his biggest flaws come with ball security, as he has had a few fumbles already in his young NFL career.
Richardson, the rookie cornerback chosen in the fourth quarter, didn't start the season great because he didn't play the first five or six weeks. But over the last few weeks, he has been quiet, which isn't a bad thing. He's not necessarily making crazy plays like Jakorian Bennett was, but he's not giving up big plays, either. Of course, he has had some rookie moments, but what rookies don't?
This will be a great opportunity to see how they do.
After a matchup with the Broncos, the Raiders will face the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Los Angeles Chargers.
