A former Tennessee Vols assistant coach was named by MikeFarrellSports.com this week as a potential candidate for the Charlotte 49ers vacant head football coaching job.
The Charlotte job came open recently when the 49ers decided to move on from Biff Poggi.
MikeFarrellSports.com listed former Vols running backs coach Jerry Mack as an option to replace Poggi.
Mack left Tennessee after the 2023 season to become the Jacksonville Jaguars' new running backs coach.
From MikeFarrellSports.com: As North Carolina Central head coach Jerry Mack won three conference titles in four seasons at the FCS level. He is a known recruiter and has coached many stellar offensive players at Memphis, South Alabama, Rice, and Tennessee before bolting for the NFL this year. He’s taken an odd career path from being a very young and successful FCS head coach to FBS and NFL assistant, but his time as an FBS head coach will come. He could be a candidate for other jobs.
The former Vols assistant seemingly makes a lot of sense for Charlotte. He already has experience as a head coach coach in the state of North Carolina after leading North Carolina Central's program from to 2014 to 2017. And his experience in the NFL and in the SEC should help to quickly improve recruiting for the Charlotte program.
Speaking of the NFL, Mack would probably be wise to escape Jacksonville as soon as possible. It's looking increasingly likely that the Jaguars will undergo a coaching change for the second time in three years with the franchise currently at 2-9 under Doug Pederson.
I'm sure Mack would love to stick around in the NFL — there's no recruiting stress to deal with — but a gig as the Charlotte head coach wouldn't be a bad opportunity for the former Tennessee assistant.
