The idea of former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott returning to the Dallas Cowboys for a second time was a cool story that was potentially never going to work out.
Now, it appears to be trending the way of just not working out. Elliott will be inactive for the Cowboys’ Week 9 game in Atlanta against the Falcons and will not be traveling with the team, according to multiple reports.
Elliott has struggled with just 3.1 yards per carry on 48 runs this season. The former Buckeye has just two touchdowns on the season and career lows across the board.
As far as why he isn’t even traveling with the team, Elliott is staying behind due to “disciplinary reasons”, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. It is unclear what transpired for the Cowboys to feel the need to discipline Elliott.
The Cowboys have been a bad team at running the ball this season and they have turned to multiple guys. It appears Rico Dowdle will continue to lead the way, who has 246 yards on the season at 4.2 yards per carry. Dallas is likely to get veteran running back Dalvin Cook into the mix more as well.
Elliott has run for over 9,000 yards in his career and has found the end zone 17 times in nine seasons. I’m just a one-year deal with the Cowboys, it is unclear what the future will hold for Elliott, whose best days are behind him as an NFL player.
Ohio State fans will always be rooting for Elliott due to the magical run he had on the way to the 2014 National Championship win over Oregon. Elliott was a star in Columbus and it translated to the NFL nicely for years. Unfortunately, Elliott is now at a bit of a crossroads.

The Buckeye could end up moving.
