OU won’t believe this: Texas volleyball drops third straight for the first time since 2011, Horns out of 1st place in SEC
Sooners end 17-match losing streak to Longhorns dating back to 2014
Texas volleyball fans rolled back their clocks as directed, but it was Oklahoma who turned back time Sunday inside Gregory Gym.
Ten years, to be exact.
The Sooners have been on the losing end of multiple five-set battles this season but not this time. Not against the ninth-ranked Longhorns. Not with junior Alexis Shelton smashing a season-high 27 kills. Not with Kamille Gibson and Kari Geissberger combining for 27 more.
Oklahoma erased a 17-match losing streak to their Red River rivals on Sunday with a five-set stunner that knocked Texas out of first place in the now-tight SEC race. It was the Sooners’ first win over the Horns since 2014 and their first win over any ranked team on the road since that fateful day a decade ago.

What’s even worse, the Longhorns (12-6, 7-3 SEC) have now lost three straight matches for the first time since 2011. Texas A&M knocked the starch out of the back-to-back national champs. Missouri followed with a massive uppercut, knocking Texas back on its collective heels.
OU (10-8, 4-6) delivered a straight-up knockdown blow right on Texas’ kisser — 25-21, 27-25, 25-19, 17-25, 9-15.
“Look, when you’re at Texas and you’re losing, it burns,” Texas coach Jerritt Elliott said. “It's embarrassing, it’s hard, and there’s a lot of things that just, you get humbled. And that’s one of the great things about sports is it can humble you pretty fast. And as we talk to them, it’s like failing is a great thing in life.
“Do we enjoy failing right now? No, but we've got to see if we can figure this out, and our staff believes in them, and we'll keep working.”

The Horns are currently down on the canvas at the moment roughly two-thirds through the SEC fight. Time to get back up. A four-game road swing commences this week, starting with a trip to Mississippi State on Wednesday.
Out-of-system balls were a bugaboo yet again, something that swamped the Horns against the Aggies and Tigers. OU coach Aaron Mansfield knew that and directed the Sooners to take targeted swings into every nook and cranny possible, leaving the Horns sprawled out in the process.
Elliott tried everything. He went back to the 5-1 lineup that Texas was using to start the season. He pulled the redshirt off freshman Reese Emerick, something Elliott initially didn’t want to do. Elliott said he did that mostly because with Madisen Skinner playing out of the back row, the offense needs another consistent passer. The Westlake product had earned a shot through practice.
Elliott was so out of whack, he was wearing a white Texas pullover on Sunday with a Big 12 logo on the sleeve. He’ll take, or wear, anything for some newfound mojo at this point.
“When you don’t win, you’ve got to look at some things to be able to try to fix it,” Elliott said. The analytics told him the Horns needed to do something. “And we were bleeding a lot of points.”
The stars have to be stars, too. Skinner hit .122 with 17 kills on 49 attempts and 11 errors. Jenna Wenaas hit .171 with eight kills and two errors on 35 attempts. Teams are clearly working around defensive force Marianna Singletary with cross shots and balls pushed to the corners.
As a team, Texas hit .188 against A&M, .256 against Missouri and .187 against OU. All rank among their lowest totals since the end of September.
“Obviously, Texas, they’re not playing their best volleyball right now,” Mansfield said. “I’m really proud of our the way that our team played, but we know that they’re going to get it going and they’re one of the most physical teams in the country. Their coaching staff does a tremendous job.
“They’re going to get it going again.”
