Another week has passed and another instance of the referees missing a major call involving Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.

Against the Los Angeles Rams, Darnold's facemask was torqued in the endzone with two referees looking straight at him but didn't see the call. The NFL saw it and fined Byron Young for the facemask.

Somehow, the officials missed another major call on Darnold, which resulted in points for the other team.

Official's mistake costs the Vikings and proves the need for a sky judge

During the first half on Sunday night, Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart got a strip sack of Darnold and Kenny Moore returned it for a touchdown. Y

You can see that Stewart's forearm hits Darnold in the head and that the referees threw a flag for it as well. Ultimately, they picked up the flag despite their being direct contact to the helmet of Darnold.

ESPN's Kevin Seifert spoke to the referees after the game and got an answer to the call, and it's not one that Vikings fans will like.

Yes, you are reading that correctly. They were only looking for a potential facemask and believed the contact to be incidental. Not being able to have a great look at this only enforces the need for a sky judge that much more.

Why doesn't the NFL have an official up in the box to assist them with plays like this? Not to mitigate every ticky-tack call, but fix the major ones that the seven on the field end up missing?

The NFL needs to make the move and it's needed to for years, but they refuse to do so. Until they fix it, plays like this will continue happening and they could end up costing a team a world championship.
