Ohio State men’s basketball team opened up their 2024-2025 season with an impressive win over No. 19 Texas out in Las Vegas late last night.

With the 10 p.m. ET tip-off, there is a good chance that some folks missed the Buckeyes’ 80-72 win over the Longhorns. Ohio State built a 38-31 lead at halftime and was able to hold off Texas in the second half.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the game was the hot shooting by Ohio State freshman John Mobley Jr., who scored 14 points off of the bench and showed some very deep range off.

“He’s gifted at getting his shot off quickly and moving off the ball,” Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler said after the win. “I recruited him. I believe in what he can do, so I think he plays with a freedom and a confidence that’s going to be really important for our team. I love his aggressive mentality and mindset.”

Mobley’s first three-pointer was nearly from the halfcourt logo inside of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It was the kind of confident pull-up shot that only select players are capable of. Coming into college it was known that Mobley was a lethal shooter. In his very first college game, Mobley showed that he had the green light once he got over the half court line.

Guard Bruce Thornton led Ohio State with 20 points and transfer guard Micah Parrish chipped in 17 points. Sophomore forward Devin Royal was impressive off of the bench with 17 points, and Mobley’s 14 points were good enough to be the fourth leading scorer.

Mobley played the third most minutes off the bench (13) and was 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line. The former four-star recruit may be a bit unknown by some folks for the being, but that is not going to last long due to his shooting ability.

If Ohio State’s first game means anything, Mobley is going to be the team’s most important freshman and he is going to have a big role off the bench. Don’t be shocked to see some big games from the 6-foot-1 guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio this year.
