When Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson decided to come back for another season, it was a surprise to many people. Henderson was 100 percent down to create an elite tandem between himself and Quinshon Judkins.
The Buckeyes are running the ball pretty well this season outside of the Nebraska and Oregon games. Ohio State is getting about 187 yards a game on the ground. Henderson has 503 rushing yards on 72 carries and Judkins has 615 yards on 95 attempts.
However, it isn’t the running-the-ball part that has been catching the eye of many when watching Henderson lately. Instead, he has bought in big time to be a good blocking running back.
“Pass protecting as a running back is not easy. It's a tough job, but I'm willing to do it, especially for the love of my brothers,” Henderson said in an interview with Eleven Warriors. “That is something I've been praying on is just laying down my life for the love of my brothers and not being selfish. And I think when it comes to pass protecting, that is a huge part of not being selfish, willing to lay your life down for the quarterback so he can pass the ball to the receivers so they can get the ball.”
Henderson has blown up defenders on multiple occasions this season where all you hear is pads popping. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound running back doesn’t shy away from that kind of contact and it is one of the reasons his teammates are so high on him. Henderson is an unselfish player and he has shown that throughout his career with the Buckeyes.
Henderson could have gone off to the NFL last year, or transferred somewhere where he is going to put up bigger numbers by not splitting touches. The future NFL back instead put the team first and chose to stick around. Ohio State is benefiting big time from it.
Henderson brings more speed and flashiness to the field, and Judkins is the power back that is going to run through defenders. The two will be so important for the Buckeyes down the stretch when the games get tougher.
It is not often in today’s game that you come across a player that has an approach like Henderson. That kind of unselfishness is not appreciated enough.
