NASHVILLE – Former Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Nate Davis was released by the Chicago Bears on Wednesday morning after a disastrous two seasons in Chicago.
Davis was a starter on the Titans' offensive line from 2019-2022 that became well known for run blocking in support of Derrick Henry.
While Davis would frequently miss games, the veteran right guard was able to lean on his ability in the run game to land a three-year, $30 million contract from Chicago in the 2023 offseason with over $19 million of guarantees.
When the deal happened, it was hard to see Davis go. As imperfect as he might have been in a Titans uniform, those closely following the team knew how impactful he was for those successful Titans teams from 2019-2022. But with the price the Bears were paying, it wasn't going to work. Tennessee was in serious cap trouble from the mess Jon Robinson had made. Ran Carthon came in and knew he had to let him walk.
That turned out to be a really wise decision. Between some personal issues and a long list of injuries, Davis has spent a lot of time unavailable for Chicago. He missed six games in 2023, and after the Bears spent the offseason publicly backing him, was a huge letdown in 2024.
Davis started two games for the Bears this season, but was benched for his lackluster performance. In 13 starts as a Bear, Davis allowed 26 QB hurries and 35 QB pressures.
He has been a healthy scratch in recent week as the Bears have trade to find a trade partner for him. But with the deadline now in the past, Bears GM Ryan Poles clearly believes it's best to just cut bait…That speaks volumes when you realize the Bears are also incredibly banged up on the offensive line.
It first seemed like Tennessee would miss Davis greatly,. But many of the issues that Davis had with the Titans have only gotten worse since landing in Chicago. It just goes to show that sometimes, it's smart to let talented players go. The NFL is a business and career paths can change on a dime.
