Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus back in August against the Las Vegas Raiders in the first preseason game of the season. He had a full repair and was out for the year.
The timeline that McCarthy was looking at was at least six months, potentially nine months. That timeline would have him easily back by training camp and they will be ready for him to take the reins in 2025.
What happened to J.J. McCarthy's knee?
On Wednesday afternoon right before head coach Kevin O'Connell stepped up to the podium, ESPN's Kevin Seifert reported that McCarthy had a "second surgery" on his injured knee.
What was interesting about Seifert reporting this was the lack of any type of details we had about McCarthy's rehab prior. We knew that he was still involved with quarterback and offensive meetings and has recently begun traveling with the team.
The other intriguing element was the use of the words "biological injection." That isn't often associated directly with surgery, but rather a medical procedure. That was later confirmed by The Minnesota Star Tribune's Ben Goessling.
The other elements that Seifert reported on seem to be universally agreed upon, but the wording of surgery seems to have been premature. Injections are relatively normal for a knee and often don't need to use an anesthetic to perform the procedure.
We don't know what the "biological injection" is at this moment, but we will update you as we learn more.
Update: The Minnesota Star Tribune's Ben Goessling provided this update on the procedure late on Wednesday afternoon.
