With college football entering week 12 of action, this regular season is finishing up quickly. With the College Football Playoff implications getting more and more extreme, there are several games that (8) Notre Dame has to keep a close eye on. It could determine where they are slotted at in the end.
Obviously, this weekend starts with the Irish taking care of business at home against Virginia. If they do, then they will continue to solidify their playoff resume. The resume, however, isn’t completed after the game is over.
(7) Tennessee at (12) Georgia
This is a win-win scenario for Notre Dame. If Tennessee loses, then they will drop behind the Irish for now. It would also hurt their chances of making the SEC Championship for an automatic qualifier, needing some chaos to happen down the stretch. If Georgia were to lose, then they would be all but eliminated from the College Football Playoffs. Even though the Bulldogs haven’t been great this season, they are still a team that nobody would like to see during a playoff setting. It could make the path toward a championship a lot easier.
Kansas at (6) BYU
It has been a tremendous season for BYU, but there have been some struggles the last couple of weeks. They keep winning, so they will be ranked high until that changes. If a team like Kansas can pull the upset, then the Cougars are going to drop down a ton. We have also seen the Jayhawks beginning to play better in recent weeks, defeating Iowa State last week and nearly defeating Kansas State the week prior. If BYU does lose, then Notre Dame will certainly jump in front of them, which would mean at least sliding up one spot.
(4) Penn State at Purdue
On paper, Penn State doesn’t really have an argument to be over the Fighting Irish other than having a better loss. This game is obviously an extreme long shot, but if Penn State loses, then they are out of the conversation. If an upset of this magnitude does happen, it is the best case scenario for Notre Dame. There is a bit of a Big Ten blockade right now, but this would make the path to the No. 5 or No. 6 seed much more attainable.
