Ohio State moved to 9-1 on the season by taking care of Northwestern at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Buckeyes pushed through somewhat of a slow start to win by a score of 31-7.

Two of those scores were through the air and Will Howard finished 15-of-24 for 247 yards and didn’t turn the ball over. But the story of the day was a special moment for the Buckeyes’ most underrated wide receiver.

The game against the Wildcats marked a return to Chicago for sophomore wide receiver Carnell Tate, whose mother was killed in Chicago last summer. With a whole bunch of supporters in the crowd for him, Tate scored two touchdowns for the Buckeyes, including a 25-yard ball down the sideline.

“The way that he has handled himself has just been an example to everybody,” head coach Ryan Day said after the game. “We care a lot about him and to see him get two touchdown passes in his hometown in front of a … I think he had 25 people here watching him. I know it means a lot to him but it also means a lot to us. Very happy for him today.”

Tate was the second-leading receiver on the day with 52 yards, but he caught both touchdown passes. You just knew Tate was going to have a moment back in the city he is from. Jeremiah Smith led the team with four catches for 100 yards but did not find the end zone.

“Carnell is not someone who talks about himself, or even would want me talking about him right now, and everything that he has been through,” Day explained. “We all know that he lost his mom and he does not show that every day when he’s here. We say it all the time that the game doesn’t care about what you’ve been through. When you cross that line and go onto the field, the game doesn’t really care. But we do.”

While teams gameplan for Smith and Emeka Egbuka first when marching up with the Buckeyes, Tate is a very key part of the room too. The former five-star recruit would be the No.1 wideout for the majority of teams around the country. Instead, he’s a selfless player who is still enjoying a nice season with 457 yards and four touchdowns.
