It became apparent from the start that Dak Prescott's hamstring injury was much more serious than expected. According to reports, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback suffered "a partial avulsion of his hamstring tendon which is partially torn off the bone."
Since then, head coach Mike McCarthy has referred to it as "obviously a serious injury," and Stephen Jones said on live radio that the quarterback would most likely end up on Injured Reserve even though Prescott was actively seeking additional opinions in an effort to avoid a long absence from the playing field.
It has now become official as Stephen Jones revealed on the radio they "will put him over there and we'll have that roster spot": Prescott is being placed on Injured Reserve and will miss a minimum of four games, making him eligible to return for Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals. At this point, even that appears to be an optimistic timetable.
“With his situation, it’s probably going to be one that is going to take a full four weeks before he could even think about making a return, if not longer," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.
Such comments inevitably lead to speculation about whether or not Prescott will return to the gridiron at all in 2024. Considering he's been paid and his usual attitude, Prescott is expected to fight to return regardless of what the win-loss record is once he's healed up, but if his rehab goes for longer than anticipated and he can't return before say, Week 16 or 17, what is the point of risking a re-injury?
The Cowboys sit at 3-5 and will try to put together a storybook effort to save the season behind quarterback Cooper Rush, who has been clutch for Dallas in the past as the backup, going 5-1 in games started. However, this is a very different scenario from 2021 and 2022, as this version of the Cowboys is worse across the entire roster.
Fortunately for him, it's looking like reinforcements are coming on defense with Micah Parsons being expected to return this Sunday. But it'll take much more than that to bring down the Philadelphia Eagles.
