Packers make a smart move to preserve rookie, but it comes at the cost of his early development

It seems like this year's first-round pick won't make much of an impact for the Green Bay Packers. On Saturday, the team placed guard Jordan Morgan on injured reserve, which means he will miss four more games because of a shoulder injury that has bothered him throughout the season.
Earlier this week, Morgan aggravated the injury, which forced him to miss practice on Friday. He had been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, and now he will also miss at least three more games, against the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, and Detroit Lions. He will be eligible to return against the Seattle Seahawks, in Week 15.
Morgan was the 25th overall by the Packers in this year's draft. A left tackle in college, he was projected to be a guard in the NFL, and that's how the Packers have used him — at least early on. He had reps at tackle throughout minicamp and early in training camp, but Green Bay established him as a right guard for 2024.
Morgan rotated at the right guard spot with starter Sean Rhyan. The rookie has played 120 snaps at the position. However, he started at left guard against the Lions two weeks ago, playing 65 snaps — center Josh Myers was hurt, forcing the Packers to move Elgton Jenkins from left guard to center.
As a rookie, Jordan Morgan has allowed seven total pressures. According to PFF, he has a 59.2 grade — including a 61.5 pass block grade.
Morgan has missed the preseason and three regular season games because of this shoulder injury — it has appeared three different times over the last three months. After his first NFL start, against the Detroit Lions two weeks ago, Morgan seemed fine and wasn’t even listed on the injury report on Wednesday coming off the bye week. However, he popped up on the report being limited at practice on Thursday, and he did not practice on Friday because of it.
The Packers' starting offensive line has Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom. Morgan was some sort of a sixth offensive lineman when needed.
The other offensive linemen on the 53-man roster are swing tackle Kadeem Telfort, veteran tackle Andre Dillard, plus rookies Travis Glover and Jacob Monk. Monk, a fifth-round rookie, is the only natural interior offensive lineman of the group.
On the practice squad, the Packers still have guard Donovan Jennings and tackle Spencer Rolland, both undrafted rookies.
Roster move
The Packers had two open roster spots after trading edge rusher Preston Smith and placing Jordan Morgan on IR. One of them has been occupied. With Jaire Alexander and Evan Williams listed as questionable, Green Bay promoted cornerback Robert Rochell to the 53-man roster.
Rochell has played four games this season — he was elevated three times from the practice squad, and also had a short stint on the 53 earlier this year.
The Packers didn't elevate anyone from the practice squad this week, and the team still has an open roster spot — rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd was expected to be activated, but an appendicitis on Friday will affect his availability for the next few weeks.
