NASHVILLE – Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan represented Titans fans everywhere when he exploded on the sidelines in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
The officiating crew cost the Titans in a big way when they called pass interference on Jarvis Brownlee Jr. on a critical third down. It was a soft call, with the flag likely coming out as a result of Justin Jefferson being the targeted receiver.
A true example of superstar treatment, especially with a rookie cornerback on defense. It gave Minnesota a first down and on the very next play, the Vikings hit a 47-yard touchdown to Jordan Addison. It never should have happened. The Vikings should have been punting the ball away.
But that wasn't even close to the most egregious call of the first half. The Vikings were leading 7-3 and going for it on 4th down from the 1-yard-line. It couldn't have been a more critical play in the first half. Sam Darnold targeted Jordan Addison in the end zone, who was hit hard by Titans safety Mike Brown.
Brown's big hit broke up the pass, but the NFL referees threw a flag and called "unnecessary roughness." The hit could not have been more clean. But instead, the officials gifted Minnesota the first down and the ensuing touchdown.
It was outrageous, and Brian Callahan absolutely exploded on the officials after the play. Callahan was called for sideline interference, running onto the field to give the officials a piece of his mind.
I absolutely loved to see this from Callahan. I think all Titans fans and players did too. At some point, enough is enough. It's the job of a head coach to stand up for his players when things are frustrating or, in this case, infuriating.
Whether it actually leads to a change on the field is a different story. But I'm sure Titans fans appreciate Callahan's passion.
Just because Tennessee is not contending in 2024 doesn't mean the games can be called unfairly against them. The NFL needs to hold these refs accountable in moments like this.
