The New Orleans Saints have been quite busy this week, along with the rest of the NFL. Unfortunately, the latest news regarding their waiver wire hopes belongs in the loss column. They couldn't control it, either.

Instead of joining New Orleans' roster, former New York Jets cornerback Shemar Bartholomew is headed to the Carolina Panthers. The Saints put in a claim for him, but Carolina held the top priority in the NFL because of their 2023 struggles.

The Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs also tried to claim him, according to Tom Pelissero. He was the most sought-after waiver target around the league.

This tough break follows a lucky swing earlier in the week. The Saints waived rookie kicker Charlie Smyth on roster cutdown day, and he was not claimed. Accordingly, New Orleans added him to their practice squad.

Smyth had to pass through waivers after a strong training camp. The Irishman got tons of traction on social media for his big leg. It was a close competition between he and Blake Grupe. Ultimately, the Saints rolled with their boot from last season…

The Saints should get Smyth back with the bonus 17th practice squad spot that comes from the NFL's international pathway program.

New Orleans also traded for DT John Ridgeway III on Wednesday afternoon to bolster defensive line depth.

We will see if the Saints have any other moves planned for this week. They probably still need to add an interior offensive lineman before Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. Don't be shocked if there is a bit more shuffling of the Saints' 53-man before their regular season kicks off.
