The Tennessee Titans still have a few items to iron out after releasing the initial 53-man roster on Tuesday.
On the final cutdown day, Tennessee traded 2022 third-round quarterback Malik Willis to the Green Bay Packers. Now without a third quarterback on the roster, the Titans could be in the market for an insurance policy at the most important position in sports.
Whichever quarterback currently on the market the Titans choose to pursue will almost certainly join the team's 16-man practice squad. There are a handful of veteran options available, but former Jacksonville Jaguars backup C.J. Beathard would be an ideal fit in Tennessee.
The Jaguars released Beathard with an injury settlement on Tuesday. Beathard missed the team's preseason finale with a groin injury but fared well in Jacksonville's first two exhibition games.
He has spent the last three seasons backing up Trevor Lawrence, but went 40-of-53 through the air for 349 yards and one touchdown in relief this past year. Beathard has a career completion percentage of 60.4 percent with 3,886 passing yards and 19 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
Beathard has local ties having played his high school ball at Battle Ground Academy, but his connections to the Titans run much deeper than that. Titans offensive coordinator Nick Holz served as Jacksonville's passing game coordinator in 2023, which gives the coaching staff a level of familiarity with Beathard. Not to mention Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley has a rapport with his former Jaguars teammate.
Although Tennessee should feel comfortable heading into the season with Will Levis and Mason Rudolph, having a third option at quarterback stashed on the practice squad gives the Titans an added sense of comfortability. Beathard has 13 career starts under his belt in his seven-year career. Not only would Beathard add experience, but he also brings knowledge of the Jaguars offense, which could pay dividends later in the season.
