The New Orleans Saints have unofficially announced their winner from the offseason kicker battle. They've chosen to go the veteran route.

Saints waive rookie kicker Charlie Smyth

Smyth has a massive leg and proved it throughout training camp. There were plenty of example of him hitting 50+ yard attempts. The Irishman impressed the staff, but ultimately, Blake Grupe did as well.

Grupe was perfect in the preseason. He made all ten kicks he attempted (5 FGs, 5 XPs).

Smyth would be an ideal practice squad candidate. Although, after some viral camp kicks and a preseason game winner, it may be tough for New Orleans to keep him off the radar of other teams.

He will have to go through waivers, so other teams will get the chance to scoop him up before the Saints can assign him to the PS.
