Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel officially offered the son of a UT football legend on Saturday.
2027 four-star safety Cooper Witten, the son of former Tennessee tight end Jason Witten, tweeted that he received an offer from the Vols on Saturday after a conversation with Heupel.
Witten, 6-foot-2/210 lbs from Argyle, TX, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 safety in the nation and the No. 5 player in the state of Texas. He's also rated as the No. 25 overall player in the nation.
From 247Sports: The son of Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys legend and eleven-time Pro Bowler, two-tie All-Pro, No. 4 on all-time NFL receptions list, and future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Cooper is another 2027 prospect with impressive bloodlines. It's also a cool story because his father has been the head coach at Argyle Liberty Christian since 2021 and in his third season at the helm got to coach his son through the fall. Coming off of a freshman season in which he totaled 80-plus tackles, two INTs, two forced fumbles, three blocked kicks, and a defensive touchdown, there's a chance Witten eventually grows from a safety into a linebacker prospect. Witten also plays basketball and runs track for Liberty Christian.
It's obviously still very early in Witten's recruitment, but it's a good move for the Vols to offer him early (Tennessee, however, wasn't the first to offer Witten…Oklahoma was the first to offer, back in early June).
Tennessee will be in the mix thanks to the connection to Jason Witten, who played at UT from 2000 to 2002, but it's far from automatic that the Vols will land the young safety. I'd expect Witten to give every school a fair look. The Vols will be a factor, but it'll be another year or two before we know if Tennessee will truly be in the thick of Witten's recruitment.
