The big thing you have to go through when building the practice squad is the risk of losing young players to the waiver wire. For those who don't know how that works, here's the skinny on it.
If you're a player that has participated in at least six games in four seasons, you are considered a vested veteran. That means when you're cut, you go right to free agency. Any player that has less than that is waived. When you're waived, you go to the waiver where every team has a chance to put a claim in on you. It goes in order of the year's draft order. The Lions would be 29th on the waiver wire.
If a player clears waivers, they can go back to the team that just cut them and be on their practice squad. With this in mind, here's three potential cuts that the Lions could lose out on bringing back to their practice squad because they get cut.
James Houston
It is not looking good for Houston right now. He's had a rough summer and essentially got demoted when the Lions finally gave up on making him a SAM linebacker. When Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about Houston after Saturday's game, his answer didn't inspire a lot of confidence that Houston would make the roster.
With all that said, there's bound to be a team that interested in claiming Houston after his big 2022 season. He won't be likely to make it to free agency.
Jermar Jefferson
I have Jefferson on my 53-man roster, but if the Lions decide to stick with Craig Reynolds, there's a shot that Jefferson could find himself getting claimed by a running back needy team. The fact is that Lions head coach Dan Campbell spent a lot of time praising Jefferson this summer and he did just have a great game against the Steelers. Teams notice that stuff. There could be a team that needs an extra running back due to injuries and could claim him up. This one is less likely than the Houston one.
Malcolm Rodriguez
I see a lot of other beat writers are going with six linebackers, but I just couldn't cut at another position to make that sixth spot. Ben Niemann was pretty good this offseason and he's earned that fifth spot over Rodriguez in my opinion.
If the Lions do move on from Rodriguez, there is definitely going to be a team that looks to claim him on the waiver wire.
The one Lions player that could sneakily have a breakout season in 2024
The Detroit Lions wrapped up their 2024 preseason this past Saturday and I found myself watching a certain player that has consistently been good in the preseason, training camp, OTAs and minicamp and I started wondering why we're not talking about this guy a lot. I'm talking about tight end Shane Zylstra. Zylstra has been […]
