Brett Rypien, the Chicago Bears veteran quarterback, got some good news on Monday that will aid in his chances of making the team's initial 53-man roster.

According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, NFL teams were informed today that the NFLPA vetoed the emergency 3rd quarterback rule put in place last season.

Under the revision, the emergency third QB teams wish to utilize must be on the 53-man roster, not an elevation from the practice squad. Meaning, Rypien has a shot to stick around on the roster after all if the team wishes to carry three quarterbacks.

The Bears already have an established backup in Tyson Bagent, who earned the role during the preseason competing against Rypien. The veteran addition still put up some solid numbers in the preseason and is a strong veteran voice to have on the sidelines for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Prior to this news, Rypien was on the roster bubble and a cut candidate to bring back on the practice squad as the team's third QB. If the team wants to keep him in the role, the team will have to find a spot for him on the 53-man roster, which takes that spot away from another player looking to make the team. In my final 53-man roster prediction, I included Rypien on that initial list.

Keeping Rypien on the 53-man roster will also allow undrafted rookie quarterback Austin Reed to return on the practice squad, saying he clears waivers, to continue developing. Therefore, the entire Bears' QB room has a chance to remain fully intact going into the regular season.

Earlier today, I listed Rypien as a potential trade candidate the Bears could look to move in order to help trim the roster down. After this latest news, that could still be an option if the Bears don't feel the need to carry three arms on the initial roster.

This is a big move made by the NFLPA that could have major implications around the league as every team looks to trim the roster down to 53 players. The majority of teams around the NFL will now look to carry three quarterbacks on the roster to avoid finding themselves in a situation the San Francisco 49ers found themselves in during the 2022 NFC Championship Game.
