The first week of the college football season produced some tremors, but the Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines are still on track for their expected top-10 showdown this weekend.

Texas (1-0) moved up one spot in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll released Tuesday and now sit third overall behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Ohio State.

Michigan (1-0) dropped one spot but still held on to its top-10 placement at No. 10.

The two historic programs are scheduled to meet for only the second time in history on Saturday at Michigan Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday.

This will be the second straight year the Longhorns have played a top-10 opponent on the road in September. Last year, Texas traveled to face No. 3 Alabama and won 34-24 in Tuscaloosa.

The Horns have a 139-165-8 all-time record against ranked teams, including a 36-50 mark on the road. At home, Texas is 52-49-4 against ranked teams.

Texas’ preseason start at No. 4 was its highest preseason ranking in the AP Top 25 since 2009. But this was the first time UT had been a top-10 preseason team since 2019.

What does new AP Poll mean for Texas, Michigan

Not much, only full steam ahead. The Longhorns and Wolverines knew they were headed for a mega-matchup throughout the summer, and this latest AP poll merely confirms it.

Neither team will be knocked out of the College Football Playoff mix should it lose. Both teams are 1-0 and play in power conferences. There is still plenty of time and football remaining for a 1-1 team to bounce back, whether it’s in the SEC or the Big Ten.

“Because of the new format, I like this matchup even more, because I think this is why you come to a Texas or you go to a Michigan is to play in games like this,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. “Our guys love this opportunity, and I’m sure their players do, too, and I think the coaches do as well.

“You know that that we get to go play in a marquee game on the road and a great environment for college football,” Sarkisian added. “And in a couple years (2027), we get to do it here with them as well.”
