FOXBOROUGH, Mass – It was an offseason of ups and downs for JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The wide receiver was entering his second year with the New England Patriots, but a poor performance during training camp left the team at a crossroads. He was on a three-year, $33 million contract with $16 million guaranteed.
If the team decided to release him, they would have all that money in dead cap. But in the end, it was the best decision and the two sides parted ways at the beginning of August.
But it didn't take long for him to find a new home, or in this case, return to a familiar place. The Kansas City Chiefs brought Smith-Schuster in on a one-year deal.
And in Sunday night's primetime win against the Atlanta Falcons, the receiver caught a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the end zone.
Having spent a lot of time with him in the receiver room during his time in New England, A to Z Sports spoke with one key weapon about this accomplishment for Smith-Schuster.
"I'm proud of him. I'm happy for him," DeMario Douglas said. "And then when he scored, I texted him instantly."
"I love to see people succeed, especially people that I know," he added. "It's inspiring and it just helps me, helps others who think like us, positivity, that nothing but good things happen."
While Smith-Schuster is no longer on the team, he and Douglas have remained close.
"He calls up on me, checks up on me, Douglas explained.
After he scored, another Patriots receiver also congratulated Smith-Schuster.
"@juju Let's gooo!!!," Kendrick Bourne wrote on Instagram.

All of Smith-Schuster's former teammates are clearly rooting for him and love to see him succeed. Let's see if he can get into the end zone a few more times this year.
