The Cleveland Browns had to have a bounce-back game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and that is exactly what happened in Week 2.
After being on the ugly side of a Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Browns were able to right the ship with an 18-13 win over the Jaguars.
It was not perfect by any means, but the Browns were able to get it done thanks to a hot start on offense and a strong defense throughout.
Following the game, All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett spoke on quarterback Deshaun Watson in his postgame interview.
“I mean he’s a leader,” said Garrett. “He’s a leader for a reason, not only because of the person that he is on the field but off the field, keeping his head held high and always being around the guys in the locker room, encouraging guys, and doing his best and putting his best foot forward. You expect great things to happen when people go the extra mile for the people around them. So it is great to see him getting the job done but also excelling and he will continue to.”
Watson stepping up and delivered a better performance than he did in Week 1 was key. Watson started 7-of-8 passing for over 80 yards and a rushing touchdown on the very first drive. That drive was perhaps the best drive we have watched Watson take part in while in Cleveland. Overall, Watson finished 22-of-34 passing for 186 yards. The most important thing is that he did not turn the ball over.
“I thought he handled the week,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said postgame. “I thought he made sure he was prepared for his football team.”
Playing at a competent level the same week that a new lawsuit came against him took some focus from Watson. He still needs to be better, but he wasn’t hurting the team on Sunday and that was a step in the right direction.
Next up for the Browns will be a home matchup with the New York Giants next Sunday at 1 p.m.
