It seems as though Tennessee Vols fans could end up seeing a favorite from last year make his NFL debut on Thursday night for the Miami Dolphins in a key divisional clash with the Buffalo Bills.
Or, at minimum, there's a growing chance of that happening.
The Dolphins released their second injury report of the week on Tuesday, and for the second straight day both Raheem Mostert (chest) and De'Von Achane (ankle) were listed as did not practice. It's worth noting that Monday was an estimation of whether the players would have been able to practice and that Tuesday was a walk through and not a full practice.
However, it's impossible to ignore that neither player managed to get back on the field for a walk through. Both will have one more chance to get back on the practice field on Wednesday, or they will surely receive (at best) a questionable designation for the game.
Even if both players manage to gut it out and play, Wright still has a chance to be activate for the contest. Offensive coordinator Frank Smith said on Tuesday that their decision to have Wright inactive last Sunday against the Jaguars had more to do with offensive game plan, roster needs, and special teams needs.
“Whenever you get a healthy inactive, it goes into what are the needs of the roster and where do you need guys," Smith said. "And a lot of the times, it’s special teams needs, defensive needs, what style of offense you’re playing, so there’s multiple variables that go into decisions or who’s inactive. But he’s done a great job, we’re really excited about him. All of our players, we’re really excited about these guys and how we’re going to play, especially this week versus a division rival in Buffalo.”
If the Dolphins were considering possibly having Wright active under the right game plan and/or roster circumstances, as implied by his response, then perhaps having two running backs ailing would be a reason to give the nod to Wright for one of the team's final active spots on Thursday. As a reminder, only 48 of the players on the 53-man active roster can be active on game days.
More clarity will be had after Wednesday's practice report is released. However, it's surely going to be something Vol fans hoping to see the former UT star make his debut will want to keep their eyes on.
