The Kansas City Chiefs are shuffling their roster and practice squad ahead of Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season.
The team announced five moves ahead of practice on Wednesday. The majority of the moves were expected as the team adjusts to injuries and open spaces on the 53-man roster.
We already knew about the reunion in Kansas City, with the Chiefs signing RB Kareem Hunt to the practice squad. The former 2017 NFL draft pick by Kansas City returns to the team after RB Isiah Pacheco suffered an injury that is expected to keep him out for 6-8 weeks.
Breaking down the other moves for the Chiefs
The Chiefs had two spots available on the 53-man roster and still have a free space after moving RB Isiah Pacheco to injured reserve.
"He's been put on IR," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said of Pacheco. "He's having surgery today. I can't give you a time when he'll return. We'll just see if it's this season or next season. We'll see how he does as he goes here."
The 51st and 52nd spot on the active roster now belong to LB Cole Christiansen and RB Keaontay Ingram. Christiansen being elevated likely has something to do with special teams. The Chiefs often roster six linebackers for special teams purposes and they only had five on the 53-man roster. The move to elevate Ingram isn't all that surprising as the team needs depth behind Carson Steele and Samaje Perine this week while Hunt gets up to speed.
Ingram has been with Kansas City since November of 2023. Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke on Ingram on Wednesday.
"He had a really good camp for us," Reid said. "Felt comfortable with him moving up. We expect him to be ready to play. I think he's done that. He's been working hard on the scout team part of it. Stayed in tune with the offense. He's in all the meetings. He's ready for it."
Finally, TE Peyton Hendershot cleared waivers and intends to re-sign to the Chiefs' practice squad, as first reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. That's not a big surprise after K.C. traded to acquire him during 53-man roster cuts. His release and subsequent re-signing to the practice squad means the conditional draft pick in the trade will not transfer to the Dallas Cowboys.
