Through two weeks to start the season, the Chicago Bears defense looks like the real deal and has been surprisingly led by the play of the defensive line.

The biggest story of the summer for the unit was the transformation of defensive tackle Gervon Dexter going into his second NFL season.

Dexter has looked great so far under new defensive coordinator Eric Washington, who has aimed to bring more of an emphasis to the team's defensive front in 2024.

The sophomore defensive lineman was involved in probably the most insane play of the season so far late in the second quarter of the team's Week 2 game on Sunday night against the Houston Texans.

On Houston's final drive of the first-half, the offense faced a 1st-and-15 with nine seconds remaining following a false start by left tackle Laremy Tunsil. In order to keep the Texans out of the endzone, the Bears rushed just one man (Dexter) and played 10 players in coverage. The unique play-call worked out with the play ending in an incompletion forcing the Texans to settle for a long field goal.

But let's not overlook Dexter's effort on the play. Despite being out-numbered 4-to-1 on the play, Dexter still fired off the ball and even pushed the protection back toward quarterback C.J. Stroud single-handedly. It was an insane feat of strength by the young pass rusher. Here's the play.

On Thursday, Dexter responded to the highlight of the play above with the most hilarious reaction possible.

"I like my odds," Dexter wrote while adding a laughing emoji.

I like his odds too and maybe head coach Matt Eberflus, the Bears' defensive play-caller, should consider calling up that look more often.

In all seriousness, Dexter has turned into a really good player for the Bears defensive line and has been a true threat on the interior the team has been searching for. In two games, Dexter has two sacks and six total pressures and some of the coaches believe he's just getting started.

"This young man works as hard and as diligent as I've seen in practice," Washington said about Dexter on Thursday. "He just he comes out every single day, and he's focused on that particular moment, what we're emphasizing, the situations that we're working on, and he's working on what he's going to do in the game during practice. I can't say enough about that."
