EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It seems the poor play from the offensive line didn't scare New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.

In the fourth quarter of Thursday's primetime game against the New York Jets, they decided to take out Jacoby Brissett and put in rookie Drake Maye instead.

This is after Jacoby Brissett was sacked five times and took 10 quarterback hits.

He was pressured on 52.2 percent of his dropbacks, according to PFF.

The quarterback was nearly picked off in his first official NFL throw, and then had a true 'welcome to the NFL' moment, when he was hit hard trying to scramble out of pressure. He even recorded his first pass completion to Antonio Gibson.

But guess what? He was still sacked because the offensive line couldn't protect him.

Then, the Patriots had some positive plays and got close to the end zone, but the clock ran out.

Listen, he has the potential to be a really solid quarterback in this league. He's got speed and can run the ball, but also has a very strong arm. It's a great combination.

But risking him when it's clear the quarterback position is not the problem is a questionable decision by the coaching staff.

The rookie was sacked twice in his short time on the field. He finished going 4-for-8 for 22 yards along with two carries for 12 yards.

What was the hope with putting Maye in? Especially considering two of the 'starting' offensive linemen left the game with injury, it was hard to justify.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo will have a lot of explaining to do with this one.
