Through five weeks, the Cowboys defense is playing at a dominant pace. They're second in sacks (20), third in pressure rate (27.6%), second in points allowed (14.4) and second in turnover differential (+5).
Featuring a front seven consisting of Defensive Player of the Year candidate Micah Parsons, and an even heavier lineup.
Defensive tackles Osa Odighizuwa, Neville Gallimore, Quinton Bohanna and Trysten Hill are having career seasons, and a heavy edge rotation of DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler and Sam Williams is making defenders take notice from more than #11. All being coached Quinn and defensive line coach Aden Durde, who's gaining national respect for the advancement of this group.
In the back end, Trevon Diggs is having what looks like an even better season than his All-Pro campaign. Alongside the return of Jayron Kearse and breakout performances from Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker. As well as large contributions from Anthony Brown and Israel Mukuamu.
A secondary that ranks seventh against the pass (193.8) and the second lowest yards per attempt allowed (5.9).
So now the answer to the question; what do the Dallas Cowboys and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn have in common? What it takes to win it all.
Dan Quinn was the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks for both of their back-to-back Super Bowl appearances (2013-14). Even acknowledging the similarities to both defensive units.
"You usually see it stay consistent and the best teams I’ve been a part of kind of got better as it went. That’s usually a really good mark of an excellent defense- ones that continually get better. Because there’s always something that you’re working on, so if you keep stacking all these good things, by the time you get later in the season, you are hard to deal with. But there has to be one of those moments where you say, ‘Whoa. That’s the one.'…
…But the thing that I have seen is this connection to one another and the communication. When you have those parts right, and how hard these guys are willing to play for one another, that’s when you have the chance to do some really cool things.”
For their 2013 defense (The Legion of Boom), they finished the year in similar rankings to this season's Dallas Cowboys rankings. In some areas, worse than Dallas.
Eighth in sacks (44), eighth against the run, first against the pass and first in turnovers created.
Both defenses featured a superstar corner who created turnovers, a bevy of pass rushers, an elite linebacker running the defense, hard-hitting safeties and elite play on all facets of the defense.
There's a reason people think this Cowboys defense is Super Bowl worthy. It's been done before. Dan Quinn knows it.
