The Las Vegas Raiders were so close to getting out of a dark, dark place when they almost beat one of, if not the best team in baseball on the road. That's right, they had the Kansas City Chiefs on the ropes. Instead, due to self-inflicted wounds, the Chiefs won by one point.
After the game during the Week 6 bye week, head coach Josh McDaniels had plenty to say about the game. He talked about what went wrong, and what needs to be better.
"Learning lessons the hard way sucks," McDaniels said. "I think our team realizes you can compete with them, but there's a difference between being in the game and being able to close the game. Those are the lessons we're going to have to learn hopefully soon."
This team definitely showed that they can beat the Chiefs, and are a threat to the top team in the AFC West. And, if they are a threat to the Chiefs, they are a threat to everyone else in the league. It's just about staying healthy and eliminating mistakes.
"I think the big thing obviously for us is – first, would be bumps and bruises,” McDaniels expressed. “We got some guys with bumps and bruises from yesterday. I mean, we're going to need to take some time to make sure that we're healthy as we go into the following week against Houston.”
Luckily for the Raiders, they have a bye week immediately after a tough, bruising game with the Chiefs, and a tough start to the season. They have been beaten up, much like a lot of other teams. I mean, they didn't even really have Darren Waller, one of the best tight ends in the league, and they barely lost.
During this bye, they need to get healthy, but they also need to evaluate some things and see just where exactly things went wrong, not only against the Chiefs but every game so far this season.
"You take this short period of time, and you try to evaluate, what are we doing well?” McDaniels said. “Let's keep doing that. What are we not doing well enough that we have to keep doing? And then we have to try to find a solution and see if we can make some progress and improve those things. I think there's always a bucket where you say, 'What are we not doing well enough that maybe we don't need to do anymore?'"
The Las Vegas Raiders are so close to being 5-0 instead of 1-4. I think a lot of people don't realize that, but if they can get healthy and cancel out those mistakes, this team is a good team. That is exactly what they should do during the bye week.
