The Dallas Cowboys picked up their sixth win of the season in Week 8, but they did so with several key contributors on the sidelines. Fortunately, the Cowboys' bye week came at the right time, and two defensive cogs specifically benefited from it.
As the Cowboys set to hit the road the take on the Green Bay Packers this Sunday, rookie edge rusher Sam Williams and veteran safety Malik Hooker are set to return to action.
It's been a steady climb upward for Williams so far this season. The second-rounder has logged nine pressures, four hurries, three quarterback hits, and two sacks in 59 pass-rush reps so far.
After getting his most snaps, and being the highest-graded rookie defensive lineman in Week 5, Williams put on his best performance of his rookie campaign so far two weeks later against the Detroit Lions. Williams had three tackles (all solo), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and the aforementioned two sacks, which led to him being the highest-graded player on the Cowboys that week.
Hooker was a part of the Cowboys revamp project at the safety position a year ago. Once he got back into football shape after coming off of an Achilles tear, Hooker gained his stride by year's end. He finished with 44 tackles, two passes defended, and an interception
That led to the Cowboys signing Hooker to a two-year deal during the offseason, and he's giving the team immediate dividends. Hooker already has 37 tackles and an interception in 2022, and his 80.2 grade has made him the biggest surprise this season according to Pro Football Focus.
Many will look at the struggles of the Packers and think the Cowboys have an easy win this week. However, with a quarterback that can light it up at any given moment like Aaron Rodgers, who's crushed the hearts of Cowboys' fans for most of his career, it's better to have as many players rushing him from the line of scrimmage and covering on the back end as possible.
