Despite early return on investments from rookie WRs Romeo Doubs and WR Christian Watson (to a lesser degree), the Green Bay Packers (3-2) still struggle moving the ball through the air.
Five games into the season, the Packers rank 18th in overall passing, with 20% of the yards coming from RPO (read-pass option). An unusual trend in the Aaron Rodgers era.
What could help elevate this offense?
In a down year for the NFC, teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco stand out as the best. While the AFC has a number of teams that look like potential Super Bowl contenders. The best way to get around it is looking more and more like outscoring opponents at will.
While the rookies, Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb are all solid options, an outside source could be what they need. An outside source like Odell Beckham Jr.
Recently, Beckham revealed his five preferred destinations:
- Packers
- Chiefs
- Bills
- Rams
- Ravens
In fact, the Packers were a potential destination last year before the trade deadline, before landing with the LA Rams. Even though Beckham likely won't be available to Green Bay until his mid-November target return line, Rodgers seemingly welcomes the former Pro Bowler.
“Well first he’s not healthy yet, I don’t think, so I don’t think there’s a need to comment until he’s healthy. But that’s really a question for Brian [Gutekunst] and his staff. I’m always going to be for adding anybody to our squad who can help us win. Whether or not we need an OBJ, who knows? But I like the person, love the player and just want him to be healthy, honestly."
In the meantime, the Green Bay Packers will need to go with who they got. If they (once again) opt to not add a weapon to the offense before this season's trade deadline, OBJ might be their last option.
Even coming off injury, Beckham adds talent and depth the receiving core seriously lacks.
