With all eyes set on week seven vs the Detroit Lions (1-4), the Dallas Cowboys are hyper focused to not repeat the same mistakes from week six. From stopping the run to avoiding turning the ball over on offense.
At the moment, the Cowboys are full of hope. QB Cooper Rush has won four of his last five starts and there is a strong possibility that week seven signifies the return of Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys field one of the league's elite defense's and is gearing up to break out on offense. After playing one of the NFL's best in Philadelphia and hanging with them despite circumstances, they know they can play with anyone.
However, that confidence should be haltered a bit as they get ready to take on Detroit.
There is plenty of optimism about Dallas' chances. Dak's possible return, combined with the Lions poor defense is all too enticing. The Lions rank dead last in points allowed (34.0 per game) and yards allowed (428.6 per game).
An issue is for Detroit is that they are very competitive against opponents deemed superior. Aside from their embarrassing 29-0 loss to New England, their remaining three losses are by a combined 10 points. Against the Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. Three of the top scoring offenses in the NFL.
The same goes for Detroit who's own offense averages 28 points per game. Headlined by one the of the league's best offensive lines, WRs Josh Reynolds and Amon-Ra St. Brown, TE TJ Hockenson and the RB duo of Jamal Williams and Deandre Swift (returning from injury) who combine for 5.4 yards per carry.
While the Dallas Cowboys defense continues to display the ability to play coverage and pressure the QB, they've shown vulnerability. The Lions can run the ball and protect their QB Jared Goff.
Even with the Cowboys leading the NFL in pressure rate and the sixth ranked defense (300.8 yards/game), teams have shown the ability to find ways to move the ball.
Running the ball and (often) finding tight end's open, even if the passes are over/under thrown or the pass is dropped. All areas of vulnerability on the Cowboys defense.
Even with the potential return of Prescott, Detroit can't be overlooked. It might not show up in the W/L column, but this team is miles better than they were in 2021.
Their defense is incredibly vulnerable, but so is the Cowboys.
If the Dallas Cowboys want to avoid the upset, they'll need to outscore the Lions. Because they will find ways to get the ball in the endzone. If they want to stop one of the league's best offenses, they'll need to make life uncomfortable in the pocket.
Otherwise, this could linger.
