There are always fireworks when the Buffalo Bills (4-1) and Kansas City Chiefs (4-1) get together. This Sunday, another chapter in one of the NFL’s most exciting rivalries will be written.

Since Bills head coach Sean McDermott took over in 2017, Buffalo has a losing record (2-3) against Andy Reid’s Chief. The teams have met in the postseason in each of the last two seasons with the Chiefs getting the upper hand in both games.

While these two consistently are jockeying for the top spot in the AFC, it’s a rivalry that is built on respect. Each team is rewriting the record books on offense behind two superstar quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.

Though the rivalry has evolved since McDermott’s hire in 2017, the Bills’ head coach says one aspect has remained the same.

“He wants to beat my tail and I want to beat his tail,” said McDermott in Friday’s meeting with the media. “You say that with respect because that’s always going to be the underlying foundation of our relationship.”

McDermott got his start in the NFL alongside Andy Reid. After the Eagles hired Reid as head coach in 1999, McDermott was promoted to an assistant to the head coach in 2001. McDermott quickly climbed the coaching ladder, ascending all the way to defensive coordinator in 2009.

Not only is there a healthy respect between two of the league’s most successful coaches, but there is a friendship that precedes football.

However, once the ball is kicked into the Kansas City sky on Sunday afternoon, it’s all business. McDermott and his Bills have revenge on their mind as they look to take pole position in the AFC.
