Dallas Cowboys, Everson Griffen

Needless to say, the beginning of the 2020 NFL season has not gone the Dallas Cowboys way. Nor has it gone Everson Griffen's way.

Griffen was signed by the Cowboys in the middle of August after spending the first 10 years of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. The hope was that the veteran pass rusher would form a productive duo with DeMarcus Lawrence as the Cowboys looked to improve on the defensive side of the ball.

Instead, Griffen has largely been a disappointment with the Cowboys through seven games. The 32-year old defender has recorded 20 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, six quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks for America's Team on the season. Aldon Smith has taken over as the best pass rusher opposite of Lawrence.

Everson Griffen could soon be on the move

When the Cowboys signed Griffen to a one-year deal worth $6 million, it was thought to be a major steal. You do not often see four-time Pro Bowlers sign for so cheap, but the Cowboys were able to ink the pass rusher for a team-friendly deal. After seven games, though, the relationship appears to be ending.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Monday afternoon that the Dallas Cowboys have "made it known" that Griffen is "available in a trade". Rapoport mentions that nearly half of the defensive end's salary is left for whatever team decides to make a move for Griffen.

Griffen looked to be a major addition to the Cowboys in August, but things just have not worked out in Dallas. Perhaps a change of scenery, playing in a different scheme, or suiting up for a contender would revive Griffin's career.

It makes sense for the Cowboys to want something in return for Griffen, as the season looks to be over from a contention standpoint. If the team could get a day-three pick in return for Griffen, you would be in business.

Griffen is not the only Cowboys player available for a deal

Everson Griffen may not be the only Dallas Cowboys defender traded before November 3rd's NFL Trade Deadline. Cowboys reporter Mike Fisher added that defensive tackle Dontari Poe and cornerback Daryl Worley have also been made available in talks.

Like Griffen, both Poe and Worley are veteran players that inked with the Cowboys this offseason. Also like Griffen, those two have not worked out in The Big D. Poe regressed in Carolina and has not improved at all in Dallas, while Worley is a liability in the secondary.

It would be surprising to see the Cowboys receive anything in return for either the 30-year old Poe or the 25-year old Worley. Both have struggled this season without providing any kind of reason for optimism. Griffen is certainly much more likely to garner interest on the trade market thanks to his previous production and the position that he plays — teams are always looking to add pass rushers.

With the Dallas Cowboys sitting at 2-5 on the season, it certainly makes more sense for the team to be sellers rather than buyers at this year's trade deadline.
