As of the 2020 Dallas Cowboys season has not been rough enough, we have now learned that both starting offensive tackles will be out for the remainder of the season.
Starting right tackle La'el Collins began the season on injured reserve, but he was expected to be back at some point during the season; however Collins underwent season-ending hip surgery in September.
Tyron Smith missed both the Falcons and the Seahawks games with a neck injury, but the All-Pro returned to the starting lineup and played every offensive snap against the Browns in week four. It was reported earlier in the week that Smith suffered a setback with his injury.
Now, it appears that Smith will be joining Collins on the sidelines for the remainder of this football season.
That is obviously not great for the Cowboys. Smith has been among the best tackles in football since entering the league. While he has missed multiple games in multiple seasons in a row due to injury, he is still one of the best at his position. The team undoubtedly gets worse when he is not on the field.
As for Collins, the LSU product truly blossomed at right tackle in 2019, and the Cowboys rewarded him with a five-year extension over the offseason; unfortunately, he won't have the chance to build on last year's success.
Now, the question is: where do the Cowboys go from here? Terence Steele has replaced Collins at right tackle, but the undrafted rookie has had his fair share of struggles. Brandon Knight has held things down on the left side of the line in Smith's absence, but he is obviously a big downgrade there.
The Dallas Cowboys did experiment with All-Pro guard Zack Martin at right tackle versus the Seahawks. Martin is one of the elite linemen in all of football, and there is certainly more confidence in him out there rather than relying on Steele.
Mike McCarthy stated that Martin currently the team's swing tackle, so we will see if we get to see more of the future Hall of Famer at tackle moving forward without Smith or Collins able to suit up.
If Martin does end up playing tackle for the Cowboys, the team will likely look to 2019 third-round draft selection Connor McGovern to slide in at guard. We have yet to see the Penn State product in game action, but there have been hints dropped that we could finally see him on the field soon.
The injury bug has not been kind to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, and this is the latest obstacle that this team will be forced to overcome. The Cowboys are now without their starting tackles, two of their best linebackers, two of their top three corners, their best defensive tackle, and their starting tight end. That is the opposite of good!
Combined with the disappointing performances of the defense and special teams, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense have even more on their plate. For now, the Cowboys are in desperate need of a win versus the Giants this Sunday.
