The Cowboys made a roster move on Saturday ahead of the team's Sunday Night Football opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
NFL teams are allowed to call up two practice squad players each week, and it is being reported the Cowboys are calling up Brandon Carr for week one.
Many assumed that the Cowboys would be interested in adding star safety Earl Thomas to its roster when the Lone Star State native was released by the Baltimore Ravens in late August; however, it was a different former Baltimore defensive back that the Cowboys ultimately added.
Brandon Carr, who played for the Dallas Cowboys through the 2012 to 2016 seasons, was picked up by the Cowboys after Dallas cut Ha Ha Clinton-Dix last Monday. Carr had been a member of the Ravens since 2017, but he was looking for a new home this season.
Dallas has some concerns in the secondary, which made the decision to add a veteran defensive back to its roster a smart move. After moving on from Clinton-Dix, combined with uncertainty at corner, the Cowboys desperately need someone to step up. It appears as if they are hoping for the veteran Carr to make some kind of impact in week one.
The 34-year-old has played corner for the majority of his NFL career, but he did showcase the ability to play some safety with the Ravens. That versatility and experience cannot hurt a team that has so much youth in the secondary.
Carr has started all of his 192 career games, the longest active streak by any defensive player in the league. He made 49 total tackles, four tackles-for-loss, seven quarterback hits, and six pass deflections for the Ravens last season.
Xavier Woods and Darrian Thompson are expected to be the two starters at safety and Trevon Diggs appears to be joined by Anthony Brown at starting corners, but Carr has a chance to add some depth and some valuable experience in the back-end of Mike Nolan's defense in week one.
