The jury is still out on whether or not Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields can develop into the franchise quarterback the organization drafted him to be.
It’s difficult to grade Fields due to the lack of talent around him. When he isn’t running for his life behind his porous offensive line, he’s throwing to one of the least talented pass-catching units in the NFL.
Fields isn’t without his own flaws. But, with his second coaching staff in as many years, it’s fair to say that he’s been dealt a tough hand of cards.
Fields showed significant progress last week, albeit in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Everybody knows he is one of the game’s most athletic quarterbacks, but Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez believes Fields’ attributes could eventually transform him into a franchise player.
“Justin Fields could be that franchise guy,” said Gonzalez on NFL Network. “He’s got unbelievable athletic abilities. He can make plays with his legs.”
Though his accuracy and pocket presence still need work, Fields is capable of turning nothing into something by using his unique elusiveness.
He put those traits on display last week in this 52-yard touchdown run that was nullified due to a phantom block in the back call.
These flash plays by Fields build hope within a fanbase starving for stability at the quarterback position.
Though he is not yet a finished product, it’s easy to understand why someone with Hall of Fame pedigree, like Gonzalez, sees the potential in one of the most athletically gifted signal callers the NFL has to offer.
