You can't talk about a Dallas Cowboys vs Green Bay Packers showdown at Lambeau without reflecting on the relationship between Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers. After all, there's a special bond between two guys that won a Super Bowl together.
In a recent interview with The Athletic by Matt Schneidman, Aaron Rodgers reflected on his relationship with his former head coach and shared some of his favorite memories from their first few years together.
In the answer, the Packers' quarterback praised McCarthy while shedding line on the head coach's biggest strength, attention to detail. Here's what Rodgers said:
"I remember about the quarterback school, mostly. We spent so much time together, those first couple, ’06 and ’07, offseasons. Brett (Favre) wasn’t a part of the offseason program a whole lot, so I got a lot of time with Tom Clements and Joe Philbin and McCarthy in those years and just remember it was a lot of ball, a lot of talking through the offense and defensive identification. Everything. Started at the beginning. Setting the huddle to here’s the formations to here’s all the motions, here’s all the backfield alignments, here’s the adjustment alignments for the F and for the E and for the U tight end and here’s all the base concepts and here’s the defense. Here’s what a 30 front is, a 40 front, a 50 front, a 3-7-9 ‘backer adjustment, 5 backer adjustment. Here's all the different coverages and then here’s the pressures."
The current Cowboys' head coach has always talked about his "quarterback school."
What actually takes place in that portion of practice has always been a little bit ambiguous. But learning that it literally starts from the ground up should give you an idea as to how detailed it really is.
Then, Rodgers dropped one of the best ways to describe what it is:
"It was a crash course — not even a crash course — it was a course at a snail’s pace in football and I’m forever grateful for those moments, those years of really getting to study as a backup and learn football and then to practice the drop, the reach, the punch, the reach, the crossover, the heel-toe, the 4-5, how it all kind of worked together and I was able to hone my fundamentals during those early years and get a lot better during those offseasons."
A course at a snail's pace in football. You've got to love that.
Reading the answer, I couldn't help remembering a tweet I stumbled upon last year from an anonymous former NFL scout. The tweet displayed a picture from a McCarthy playbook and the amount of detail in each slide.

While many would assume every NFL coach provides the same detail in his presentations, this is definitely more information packed into the slide than average. If you're overwhelmed by the amount of info, that's probably okay.
Oh, here's another one.

Whether or not Mike McCarthy ends up winning a Super Bowl for the Dallas Cowboys remains to be seen. But there's no questioning he's got one of the most important traits an HC needs to win it all. A ravenous hunger for detail.
