Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields came extremely close this week to throwing shade at former Bears head coach Matt Nagy.

Fields spoke this week about some of his struggles from his rookie season. And while he didn't directly blame Nagy for putting him in a bad position last season, Fields implied that things could've been set up better for him in Chicago.

"Do I think I was always put in the best position to succeed? You know, I don’t know,” said Fields (via The Athletic). “But at the end of the day, that doesn’t matter. You just have to handle what you’ve got and try to make the best out of it.”

It’s definitely a different mindset than last year,” added Fields. "I’m ready to roll and I’m ready to lead this offense and lead this team.”

“A lot of ups and downs, but I definitely learned a lot so, you know, thankful for all the experiences and, you know, stuff we had to go through,” continued Fields. “The stuff last year is just going to make me better, so of course I’m excited for Year 2.”

Fields took a judicious approach with his comments. He was careful to not trash Nagy and the previous coaching staff. But it's obvious from Fields' comments that he wasn't thrilled with how things transpired last season.

Of course, that shouldn't come as a surprise — Nagy didn't exactly have a great reputation after the way he handled the quarterback position (with Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles) in 2020.

Good for Fields for keeping it classy while also expressing his feelings about his rookie season. He definitely wasn't put in a great position to succeed. But Fields is also right that it's time to turn the page and focus on winning games under new head coach Matt Eberflus.
