In the aftermath of a disappointing Dallas Cowboys playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Mike McCarthy has felt his seat get significantly warmer. The Cowboys got outclassed at AT&T Stadium in every phase of the game.
It wasn't about a few key plays, even though Cowboys Nation is still arguing about a surprising QB draw. It was about getting dominated at home while committing 14 penalties, a franchise playoff record. If you look at the final score, you see a one-possession close game. If you look at the game, it wasn't really close.
All of which raised a Mike McCarthy conversation that arrived much earlier than expected. Should the Dallas Cowboys move on from their head coach?
Stephen Jones was on 105.3 The Fan Monday morning to answer such a question. It was the first public vote of confidence from the Cowboys' front office.
Although NFL front offices tend to give public statements that don't always match their actions, this feels like the Cowboys are indeed bringing back McCarthy in 2022. However, the coaching staff will likely look quite different moving on as Dan Quinn and Kellen Moore interview for multiple NFL teams, including the Denver Broncos.
The truth is a drastic move at head coach would've been a surprise considering how the Cowboys have handled the position in recent years. But Jerry Jones was right postgame when he talked about how disappointing it was to see such a talented team fall like that in the Wild Card round.
Mike McCarthy will not be fired this offseason, at least according to Stephen Jones. But expect him to be in the hot seat moving forward and with Dak Prescott locked up through 2024, the Cowboys' patience will be running thin.
Now that the Dallas Cowboys have given McCarthy their public vote of confidence, it's time to ask the tough questions. On Monday night's show of A to Z Sports Dallas Primetime, we discussed such questions.
