One of the biggest needs the Dallas Cowboys have to fill is at wide receiver. At first glance, the receiver room doesn't seem as bad until it's dissected:
- CeeDee Lamb is the team's presumed number one option, but hasn't yet taken the next step Cowboys fans and analysts had hoped for. Just yet.
- Michael Gallup is back on a new deal, but is likely to miss the first quarter of the season recovering from his torn ACL.
- James Washington is on a one-year deal and he's an inexpensive player who gives Dallas quality depth, but doesn't get the receivers room to the same depth it was a year ago.
- Noah Brown is back on a one-year deal but is primarily a special teams player and quality blocker, despite coming off a career-best season.
- Simi Fehoko has plenty of size and speed to his name, but has yet to record a reception in an NFL game and is all potential at this moment.
After seeing Cedrick Wilson leave in free agency and trading Amari Cooper, the Cowboys are now without two of their top receiving threats from a year ago. However, that seemingly hasn't stopped them from attempting to fix the position.
It was reported earlier in the week that the Dallas Cowboys were one of the teams interested in trading for DeVante Parker. While arguably not an upgrade over the players lost, it would've reinvigorated the group. Enough to not force the team to reach for a receiver in the upcoming NFL Draft.
In less than a week, the Cowboys have already looked into adding another high-end receiver in Houston Texans' Brandin Cooks.
Adding Brandin Cooks to the Cowboys roster would be an interesting move. Cooks is only 28 years old and has eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving in six of his eight seasons in the NFL.
His contract is incredibly team-friendly. The Texans would save over $8 million in cap space as a designated pre-June 1st transaction. He has no more guaranteed money attached to him and has two void years tagged to 2023-24 seasons.
In theory, if the Cowboys were to keep him beyond 2022 it would be extremely cap friendly for one Stephen Jones. His combined cap figure for 2022-24 would be less than $13 million, giving them the flexibility to extend players like Lamb or Trevon Diggs as the salary cap continues to climb.
He hasn't yet shown any indications he's lost a step, and is still a great separator against coverage. Having stayed as one of the better runners with the ball in his hand at the position.
Given the Dallas Cowboys recent history of making these type of trades, it doesn't seem likely that they'd pull the trigger.
If they were to do so, it would put the receiving core in a much better position than where it currently is. A dynamic threat who can run crisp routes and give Dak Prescott and the offense another down-field weapon in their arsenal.
