In the AFC Championship Game, the Kansas City Chiefs destroyed Buffalo. Yes, the score says 38-24, but it was not that close at all.
Kansas City started off lousy. With a muffed punt by Mecole Hardman, the Bills could go up 9-0 quickly. After that, Kansas City never looked back.
They strung together consecutive drives of scoring, combined with fantastic defense. But should we be surprised, considering the Chiefs are "Built Different." in postseason play?
When looking at the Chiefs and how they performed this game, you will see positives across the board. However, there is one area that they capitalized on most to get this win.
Offensive Line of Kansas City Stepped Up
For most of the season, the Chiefs have needed to make improvements on the offensive line. Throughout the season, Patrick Mahomes was being hit too much.
During the Cleveland Browns game, Patrick Mahomes was hit and had to leave the game due to concussion protocol. Of course, they still came out of the game with a win. However, I assume that lit a fire under the offensive line.
Against Buffalo, the offensive line was terrific. Even after Eric Fisher left the game due to a torn Achilles, they were near perfect in protecting their leader.
To put things into perspective about just how good the line was, here are some stats. To start, the Buffalo Bills offensive line was terrible, therefore making the Chiefs look even better.
In this game, the offensive line did not allow a sack. That's a big step up from what has happened this season. They only allowed 11 quarterback pressures. With Patrick Mahomes being pressured only 11 times, it means he had more time to make plays.
A lot of times, you will also see an offensive line hurt their team in different ways. Penalties can be a huge part of that. The Chiefs offensive line had zero penalties to the Bills five.
Obviously, the offensive line will have their hands full against Tampa Bay. With the Buccaneer's great defensive front and Eric Fisher missing, Kansas City will need to step it up even more in Tampa.
