NFL trade news broke on Thursday morning that directly affects the Dallas Cowboys.
Adam Schefter reported that the Philadelphia Eagles are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. Philadelphia receives a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-rounder in exchange.
The Colts are a quarterback-needy team, and it was expected that the team would strike a deal for a signal caller. The Chicago Bears were another team that reportedly had interest in making a move for Wentz.
Indianapolis is obviously hoping that Wentz is the missing piece to the puzzle. The Colts went 11-5 last season, nearly knocking off the Buffalo Bills in the postseason. Their offensive line is the best in the league, and the defense is filled with talent.
Wentz flashed in 2017 before tearing his ACL. Since then, it has been mostly a bumpy ride for the 2016 second overall pick. But, with the Eagles taking the hit for Wentz's contract, it makes some sense for the Colts to see if they can revive his career.
What this means for the Cowboys.
The Jalen Hurts era is officially on in Philadelphia. The Cowboys played against the former Oklahoma and Alabama product once during his rookie season. In that game, the Cowboys gave Hurts some fits and forced two interceptions.
Hurts gives the Eagles a dual-threat quarterback that has the ability to hurt defenses with his arm and his legs. He flashed during his first few starts — especially against the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints.
He did hit a wall down the stretch, but Hurts gives the Eagles a more dynamic player than Wentz at this stage in their respective careers, and Philadelphia has a top-6 draft pick to build around him with. The Eagles' rushing attack certainly reaches new heights with Hurts behind center, and they could very well add one of the draft's top pass catchers to aid his development as a passer.
Interestingly enough, Hurts has drawn some comparisons to Dak Prescott — largely due to his leadership and charisma. Additionally, Philadelphia hired Prescott's college quarterback coach this offseason.
Speaking of Prescott…
Dak Prescott is the only quarterback from his draft class to still be on his orginial team.
The Cowboys drafted Dak Prescott with the 135th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Prescott was the eighth quarterback taken in his draft class. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were the top two picks, while the likes of Paxton Lynch and Christian Hackenberg were taken ahead of the Mississippi State product.
Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason, and we wrote on what that means for the Dallas Cowboys and the NFC as a whole. Meanwhile, Lynch and Hackenberg are both out of the league.
Entering the 2021 offseason, Prescott is the only quarterback still on the team that selected him in the draft. That is pretty noteworthy.
Prescott has established himself as not only the best quarterback from his draft class, but also one of the best passers in all of football. The Cowboys lucked into their franchise signal caller, and it is time for them to reward him.
We will certainly miss those heated Dak versus Wentz debates between Cowboys and Eagles fans.
