The 2021 quarterback carousel is already off to an entertaining start. The Dallas Cowboys will be involved in one way or another.

Dak Prescott is still looking for a new deal. It remains to be seen whether or not he and the Cowboys will come to terms on a contract extension. Prescott has already seen two of his draft classmates move to different organizations this offseason: Jared Goff to the Lions and Carson Wentz to the Colts.

Dallas must decide what to do with their franchise signal caller.

Elsewhere, Deshaun Watson is still making it known that he wants out of the Houston Texans' franchise. Sam Darnold could be on the move from the Jets. Gardner Minshew is another candidate to be on a new team next season. As is Jimmy Garoppolo.

If all of that is not enough, there is a chance that Russell Wilson could be suiting up in a different uniform come the fall.

Russell Wilson to the Cowboys?

Reports surfaced earlier in the week that Wilson could be on the way out from Seattle due to "power and control". More reports suggested that a move could be made "in the near future".

Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that Wilson has not demanded a trade as of right now. That said, Schefter did report four teams that the Super Bowl-winning quarterback would consider playing for if he is indeed traded.

Wilson's preferred destinations if moved out of Seattle are:

  • Dallas Cowboys
  • New Orleans Saints
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Chicago Bears

Drew Brees retiring leaves the quarterback position in question for the Saints, but how would Wilson fit under the salary cap? Jon Gruden certainly isn't shy about making splashes, so the Raiders would be an intriguing landing spot. Everybody knows how badly the Bears need talent behind center.

There is no denying that the most polarizing option is the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson would have the chance to play for the biggest brand in the sport with an offense filled with talent at the wide receiver position. He would have the opportunity to start over with a new organization while remaining in the NFC.

That said, the Seahawks also have talent at wide receiver in Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metfcalf. Pete Carroll is universally regarded as a better coach than Mike McCarthy. Dallas does offer the better offensive line — if healthy — but there is no denying that the Seahawks are largely a better-run organization than the Cowboys.

Furthermore, in order for this to work, the Cowboys would have to move on from their own talented franchise quarterback. Dak Prescott is a bonafide franchise signal-caller that is one of the five-to-ten best in the world at the position. He is also four years younger than Wilson and is just now entering his prime.

The Cowboys have shown to be reluctant to pay Prescott, so would they be interested in taking on some of Wilson's salary? It wouldn't make a ton of sense, even if the team does believe Wilson is a marginal upgrade.

All of that said, ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that a Cowboys source told her that "Dak is our quarterback" and that the team is working on reaching a deal. So, that likely puts an end to the Russell Wilson-to-Dallas story.

Trades are always fun and interesting, especially trades that involve star quarterbacks. A trade involving Russell Wilson certainly fits that bill and will surely excite some fan bases.

However, the Dallas Cowboys are better off working out a deal with their own star quarterback that is already on the roster instead of throwing away draft capital.
