After a historically bad defensive performance in 2020, the Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need of an elite shut-down cornerback. Although Trevon Diggs had a promising rookie season, the Cowboys finished with the 29th overall secondary in the NFL last season according to Pro Football Focus.
Luckily, Dallas owns the 10th overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft and will have the opportunity to get one of the premiere defensive backs in the country with that pick.
Alabama's Patrick Surtain II, Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley, and South Carolina's Jaycee Horn are the consensus top cornerback prospects in the upcoming draft.
The question for the Cowboys in the weeks leading up to the draft is, which one is the best fit in Dan Quinn's heavy cover-3 and cover-1 scheme?
It is well known that new Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn loves size, length, and athleticism at the cornerback position, which is why I think Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley would be the best fit in this defense.
Farley is the perfect blend of those three components and would be an ideal compliment to Trevon Diggs because of his traits and play style.
The Virginia Tech product is listed at 6'2, 207 pounds and is reported to run in the low 4.3s, which shows up on tape. He posses all the physical tools you could want in a corner back prospect.
That being said, Farley isn't just an athletic freak with absurd potential. He's got legit cornerback instincts, which allow him to be effective in both man and zone coverages.
Although he's only played the position for two seasons, the former Hokie is already technically sound in his footwork and when he's re-routing receivers.
Farley possesses solid ball skills and elite short area burst as well, which allows him to break on the ball exceptionally fast, as seen in the play below.
Farley can play a little too aggressively at times, but his athleticism, intelligence, and patience are able bail him out of trouble.
The bottom line is that Caleb Farley is the prototypical cover-3 cornerback and has all the ingredients to be an elite man-to-man corner in the NFL. He's a complete cornerback prospect and would fit like a glove in the scheme Dan Quinn is bringing to Dallas.
In Seattle, Dan Quinn's secondary featured Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner, and Byron Maxwell, who were all over 6-ft tall and 200 pounds with 33" arms. As head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Quinn drafted Isaiah Oliver and AJ Terrell who were also both over 6-ft and 200 pounds. Based on Dan Quinn's history, Caleb Farley could be next in line to be his premiere corner in Dallas.
