The Tennessee Vols are among the top schools for one of the nation's top 2024 recruits.
2024 five-star defensive lineman David Stone revealed his top 10 schools on Friday and he included the Vols, along with Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC, LSU, Oregon, Alabama, Michigan State, Miami, and Florida.
Stone, 6-foot-4/270 lbs from Oklahoma City, OK (he attends IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL), is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 2 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Florida. He's also rated as the No. 9 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.
It's still early in Stone's recruiting process, things will play out over the next year, so it's unclear exactly how good of a shot the Vols have to land the talented defensive lineman.
There are two things to note about Stone and Tennessee's pursuit of him.
One thing is that he's from Oklahoma, so Vols head coach Josh Heupel, who played two seasons for the Sooners, should have plenty in common with Stone.
The other thing to note isn't nearly as positive. Stone attends IMG Acadamy, which is where former Vols tight ends coach/linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer is the defensive coordinator.
Niedermeyer was one of the coaches who was fired by Tennessee in light of the NCAA recruiting investigation that popped up under Jeremy Pruitt.
Earlier this year, Niedermeyer threw some shade at Tennessee after wide receiver Carnell Tate committed to the Vols over Ohio State.
I don't know if Niedermeyer would push Stone away from Tennessee, but it's certainly something for Vols fans to keep an eye on.
