Secondary, defensive line, and linebacker all have question marks that must be answered. The overwhelming presumption is that Dallas will add one of the draft's top corners with the 10th overall pick. It is also safe to assume that the Cowboys will add a linebacker at some point in the draft.
Adding a pass rusher opposite of DeMarcus Lawrence to pair with Randy Gregory is another smart route for the Cowboys to take. Unfortunately, there is a not a clear-cut elite pass-rushing prospect in this year's class. Miami's Jaelean Phillips is the closest thing to that, but his concussion history will likely scare many teams off.
As the Cowboys attempt to bolster their pass rushing attack this offseason, Aldon Smith has signed with another squad. Smith, who spent just one season in Dallas, inked with the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday.
That is an interesting development, because the Cowboys reportedly refused to trade Smith to Seattle ahead of last year's trade deadline. The former 49ers and Raiders pass rusher flashed early on in the 2020 season, but his production dropped off in a big way after the first few weeks.
Smith's biggest game in his first season back since 2015 actually happened against his new team. Aldon Smith sacked Russell Wilson three times, recorded four more QB hits, and made four tackles in the week three 38-31 road loss.
Dallas never really seemed too interested in bringing the 31-year-old back for the 2021 year. The Cowboys went out and signed former New York Jets outside linebacker Tarell Basham in free agency. Randy Gregory is also expected to have a bigger role in Dan Quinn's defense.
Improving the pass rush has to be a priority for the Dallas Cowboys in 2021. EDGE could be a need that the Cowboys look to address in the draft after Smith officially inked elsewhere.
However, the staff appears to believe Gregory deserves a large role this upcoming season.
